Okay, how many of you that voted on the Teyla pairing poll on [info]teylafen actually (a) members of the community and (b) fans of Teyla?

ETA: A lot of you have responded and thanks for that. I've learnt that a lot of my flist are Teyla fans!!

The teylafen community ran a Teyla pairing poll, of which last night I was the sole person to have voted against J/T. Imagine my surprise when I come this morning to find that the anti-J/T numbers had swelled to over the number of members (almost). I check the names and there's a lot of folk who are not on that community voting. Now it's their right to vote because it was an open poll, but I find it a wee bit irritating.

I just saw your link and voted Teyla/Ronon (since it was an open poll). Was I bad? *cowers*

I saw it in the Sparky thread too. I did vote, and no, I'm not a member of the community. But it's not like I was trying to affect the outcome. Frankly, I didn't even notice what community it was in. The message said "There is a poll about Teyla pairings" and off I went to give my opinion about Teyla pairings. If people from outside the community aren't wanted, then it shouldn't be an open poll, don't you think?

Heh. I saw it in the Sparky thread too, but I do like Teyla/Ronon or Teyla/Michael. I may not openly support them, but I am in the [info]ronon_teyla comm. Does that mean because we are Sparky shippers? That our vote for Teyla/Ronon is discounted?

And when you look at it, there are a quite a few people in that community too. ;)

I don't believe you were trying to affect the outcome. But to post a poll about Teyla pairings in the Sparky thread and then encourage folks to go and vote is Off. Topic for the Sparky thread. It's only there for one reason.

I agree it was off-topic, and for the original poster, probably an attempt to affect the process. (Although by 'affect' she might have been thinking 'get a more valid representation' under the assumption that the majority of the people who would see the poll without intervention were inclined one way. Still, in retrospect, inappropriate.)

I'm just saying I don't think those of us who voted did anything inappropriate. Just because a person is 'shipping John/Elizabeth doesn't mean they don't have an actual opinion on a Teyla 'ship and are voting just to vote down John/Teyla. I don't dislike John/Teyla because I like John/Elizabeth. I just have other preferences.

But what am I saying???!!! McBeckLa all the way!!

I agree it was off-topic in the SW thread, but I followed the link through your LJ. (Don't go on GW as much anymore. I just popped into see what discussion they were on and saw the link and I was confused.)

I like Teyla. She's an interesting character, and she's fun to write.

I'd never heard of the comm until yesterday, but I participated in the poll. I also linked it on my journal because I knew there were folks on my friendslist who like Teyla, and like her in specific pairings, who weren't in the comm, either. I didn't realize it was supposed to be a comm-only poll or something. I wasn't trying to run up the score against J/T, I was trying to get Teyla/Ronon represented, because it surprised me that I was one of two people (at the time) to have voted for them.

Also, the poll was linked on the newsletter. That's part of why people came from outside.

Posting it in a non-teyla-related community/thread was definitely uncalled for. I agree with that completely. Some people don't understand how to leave other parts of fandom alone.

I don't know if Trialia saw the poll on the newsletter or in my post. I'm hoping the newsletter...

Ya see, I never knew you liked Teyla 'til now, but on reflection I see your icon... I didn't see what you posted. I think the original poster meant it for the community (you'd have to ask her I guess) but it kind of grew and grew and I suppose if it drums up publicity for the comm and some fandom love for Teyla then that's great.

It was more people voting against J/T because it was J/T that I was irritated with. Yes, exactly, leave it/them alone!

Actually, neither. It was on a post from someone else on my flist. And I wasn't really trying to get J/T anti-scored, I just wanted to show that there was more of a range of pairings we give Teyla than were represented there at that time. Honestly, I love Sora/Teyla.

I believe you didn't mean to, but if you look at it from another viewpoint it looked really bad. It looked like a S/W shipper was trying to encourage others S/W to crash a community and bash S/T. Anyway, no harm seems to have been done, and I found out that a lot of other folks on my flist love Teyla too.

Maybe I find this easier because my work is very political and we always have to think about what we're saying, when we say it and where we say it, so posting a link to that poll in the S/W thread would have been a no-no for me, but in the S/T thread, a definite yes. Which was what I went and did. :p

I'll admit I didn't even know what community it was. Bad Sally!
I'm rather indifferent to Teyla but I'm starting to like her better. I do like her interactions with Rodney, Carson and Micheal (which I voted for). I voted against her with John and Zelenka bc I truly don't see it, not for an ulterior motive :)

One reason I've never wanted to be identified as a shipper in any fandom I've ever been involved in is because it always seemed to me that shippers were the most mean spirited, irrational, and devisive group around. When I said that I was ashamed of the way some Shep/Weir stuff has gone, it's quite true, and in this case I feel responsible for the behavior of that ship.

It's not fair to paint all shippers, or even all people who like one ship in particular, with one brush. Yes, there are a few bad apples out there. That doesn't mean we're a "mean spirited, irrational, and devisive group." A few people does not a ship make.

I, too, am ashamed when I see John/Elizabeth people causing trouble, because it casts us all in a very bad light. Unfortunately, those people are the ones everyone else sees, because they're sticking their noses where they don't belong. The nice ones tend to keep to their own territory and don't bother with the rest, from what I've seen.

Well, I posted in the Teylafen poll and I like Teyla PLUS I just joined the community the other day. *pats self on back* ;)

I didn't keep track of the poll, but it's likely that users not in Teylafen were directed there by others and they drastically changed the poll results. I didn't know it was plugged on the S/W thread, I had heard that it was plugged on the SGA newsletter LJ com or something gen like that. I don't quite see the point of plugging a Teyla/x ship poll on the S/W thread either - it would be like plugging an Elizabeth/x ship poll on S/T or plugging a Shep/x ship poll on M/W. Off topic, and possibly meant to encourage subversion of the poll.

Besides, I don't really see the point of trying to subvert a poll, regardless of the poll. It's just numbers of a VERY small percentage of the viewing audience, and it's not like numbers determine which ship gets to be canon, or (much more importantly) which canon ship actually ends up being good.

Maybe this is one of those examples where TPTB would be better off having never interacted with the internet fandom. Having Joe and Martin answer fan questions and having Rainbow and Torri pop into GW threads only encourages the thought that TPTB and the actors are monitoring the fandom and are more likely to make show decisions based on what they read. And then some fans get overprotective and overzealous of polls, like their side has to "win" or they have to make the other side "lose" or something. I want TPTB to make decisions internally, based on what they think is best for the show, not what they think the fans want or don't want to see.

Or maybe I'm just in a "blame everything on TPTB" mood. I've been going through that a lot recently. :)

I have to say: C) Neither.

I like Teyla more, since season 1, but I can't call myself a fan of hers. I would call myself a fan of Rachel Luttrell, though (I know, that doesn't make much sense). But there are pairings I'd really like to see Teyla with because her interaction with them just brightens up the episodes.

(a) nope, but it's not because I don't love her and (b) yes, big fan! Just suck at writing her and don't really have the time to madly-fangirl both her and Elizabeth at the same time. But she's definitely my favourite character after Liz, and not too far after either. ♥
