Must be something in the water. This time it's liliumscribe's fault. We were having a discussion about Teyla and Weir on her LJ, and I said we didn't need to have a knitting bee. EL pointed out that a knitting bee might be good to help Teyla get some clothes. And this was born.
Note! I like Teyla! This is not written at her expense...
Knit One Purl Two
"Elizabeth's granny had always said to her "Never cast a cloot until May is oot" and since Elizabeth's Scottish grandmother had long be hailed as the bastion of wisdom in the Weir family, Elizabeth had always ensured that she was well covered up until at least midsummer.
Therefore, it was a source of great concern to her that Teyla seemed to have no clothes at all that were useful in combating the chill of an Atlantis evening when the mist rolled in over the ocean, shrouding the city. She knew that Teyla had only managed to bring a few tops and trousers with her, none of which were in any way practical, and really it wasn't in Elizabeth's best interests as leader of Atlantis that Teyla come down with some Pegasusan lurgy.
And so she had sat down with her knitting needles one night in the canteen and cast on enough stitches to knit Teyla a warm cardigan, based on one her Granny had knitted for Elizabeth and that had stood her in good stead through thick and thin, college and diplomacy, the Milky Way and the Pegasus Galaxy.
One night, Kate Heightmeyer had noticed her knitting. The next evening Elizabeth found herself joined by Kate, the evening after that two members of Rodney's science team, the evening after that two marines. Soon there were 10 women knitting regularly of an evening. Knitting it turned out was a common occupation - it helped spend the time while others - both loved and unloved - were in the field.
And thus the Atlantis Knitting Bee was constituted.
Teyla never joined though. Although she appreciated the socks, vests, cardigans, leg warmers and scarfs the other women knitted for her.
The End"
